Lesson Title: Effects of a Volcano

State Standards:

ESS1 (5-8) POC-3 - Explain how Earth events ( over time and abruptly) can bring about changes in the Earths surface: landforms, ocean floor, rock features, or climate.
3b- Evaluating fast processes ( erosion, volcanoes and earthquakes) to determine how the Earth has changed and will continue to change over time.

Context of Lesson:

In this lesson the students will be using the volcanoes which they built the day before in class and creating a volcanic eruption. Then the students will be stating what happened during their volcanic eruption and they will be learning which effects this eruption can have on the world around them. This lesson is located right before the inquiry assignment on global warming and will be a good transition for the students. They will be learning about how volcanoes can effect the atmosphere which will give them a start on how many other aspects of our world negatively effect the earth.

Opportunities to Learn:

Depth of Knowledge

DOK 2 Skills and Concepts- The students will be making observations as to what happened in the volcanic eruption which they created in class. The students will also be making inferences and predictions with how volcanoes affect the world around them.

Prerequisite Knowledge

The students will have already built and labeled their volcanoes as well as watched videos of volcanic eruptions online and have taken notes on this scenario. These students will allow the students to make connections between volcanoes and the world around them

Plans for Differentiating Instruction

Advanced Students- These students will be given the question after their volcanic eruption asking them to compare their eruption to the eruptions which they have viewed on you tube for homework.

Environmental factors

The students will be working in their lab groups from the previous day. The students will be acting in a proper manner following the safety guidelines which they have been using through out the year. A quick lab safety review will happen due to the content of this lab experiment. It will be good for the students to get a review on proper lab safety and consequences if these safety guidelines are not followed.

Materials

Volcano project from last class, warm water, red food coloring, liquid dish detergent, baking soda, vinegar, observation sheet

Objectives:

  • The objectives of this lesson is for the students to be able to describe which happens in an erupting volcano. Also the students will be able to say how an erupting volcano can effect the world around them.
  • Some misconceptions students have are the definitions of magma and lava, these words will be defined properly throughout this lesson.

Instruction:

Opening:

  • To open the lesson the teacher will ask the students to explain what they saw in the you tube videos on volcanic eruptions for homework the night before. The teacher will be walking around checking that the students have taken notes on the videos while this discussion is going on.
  • The students will receive a safety review and the consequences of poor behavior during a lab.
  • After the students have talked about the results a volcano can have they will break into their groups and make their volcanoes erupt.

Engagement:

  • First the students will put warm water and red food coloring into the 2 liter bottle in the middle of the volcano which the students created last class
  • The students will then add 6 drops of liquid dish detergent, then the students will add the 2 TBSP of baking soda to the mixture of water and dish soap.
  • Then the students will add the vinegar to the bottle and stay clear of the volcano.
  • The students will write down observations during the eruption which they have created. The students will see an eruption which is caused by the chemical reaction between the baking soda and the vinegar.
  • The students will then clean up their volcano mess and then go back to their original seats.
  • The students will be asked to share some of their observations with the whole class and the teacher will clear up any misconceptions the students have as to what made the volcano they created erupt.
  • The teacher will then guide the students along in a discussion explaining other effects that volcanoes can have on the world around them.

Closure:

  • The students will then be filling out exit slips "How do volcanoes have an effect on Global warming? or Where in the world do you believe the most volcanic eruptions occur??Why??"

Assessment:

  • The students will get a homework grade for the notes which they have taken on the you tube clips the night before.
  • The students will be asked questions on the effects of volcanoes on the unit test.
